1. P C Pant appointed as Acting Chairperson of NHRC

  • Justice (retd) Prafulla Chandra Pant has been appointed as the Acting Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with effect from April 25, 2021.
  • He is a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) since 2019
  • Prior to his appointment as NHRC member, he was a Judge of the Supreme Court
  • He also served as Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya.
  • NHRC: Statutory public body constituted in 1993. It consists of a Chairman and Five members.

2. Vijay Goel takes additional charge of CMD THDC India Limited

  • Vijay Goel has assumed additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) India Ltd with effect from May 1
  • He is currently handling the responsibility of post of Director (Personnel) of THDC.
  • He joined THDC in 1990 as Senior Personnel Officer (SPO) 
  • THDC India Limited: Mini-ratna PSU under Ministry of Power. It is a power utility company and wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited. It was incorporated in July 1988.

3. Pinarayi Vijayan submits resignation to Kerala Governor

  • Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan has submitted his resignation letter to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan.
  • He will continue to serve as Chief Minister till the new government is sworn in.
  • He was serving as the 12th CM of Kerala since 25 May 2016.
  • He was the leader of ruling CPI(M)-headed Left Democratic Front (LDF).
  • His party won 99 of 140 seats.
  • Capital of Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram.

4. Lewis Hamilton wins 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix

  • Mercedes racer Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain) won the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix, which was held at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal.
  • This was the second victory of the season for Hamilton and 96th career victory.
  • Max Verstappen (Red Bull-Netherlands) came second, followed by Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes-Finland).
  • This was the third race of the season of the 2021 Formula One World Championship.

5. International Firefighters’ Day: 4 May

  • International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed every year on May 4 to recognize and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible.
  • The day was instituted, after the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a bushfire in Australia on 2 December 1998
  • It was celebrated for the first time in 1999.
  • May 4 is also celebrated as Saint Florian’s Day.

6. Thisara Perera announces retirement from International Cricket

  • Sri Lankan all-rounder and former captain Thisara Perera (32 years) has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending his international career which spanned nearly 12 years.
  • He made his debut in December 2009.
  • He played six Tests Matches, 166 ODIs (2338 runs, 175 wickets), and 84 T20Is (1204 runs, 51 wickets) for Sri Lanka.
  • He will continue to play domestic and franchise cricket.

  • Former Union Minister and Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Jagmohan (94 years) passed away in New Delhi
  • He served as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Goa.
  • He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha once and represented New Delhi in Lok Sabha thrice.
  • He served as the Union Minister for Communications, Urban Development, Tourism and Culture in Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cabinet
  • Awards: Padma Shri in 1971, Padma Bhushan in 1977 and Padma Vibhushan in 2016.

8. Mahesh Balasubramanian appointed as MD of Kotak Life Insurance

  • Mahesh Balasubramanian has been appointed as the Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company (KLI) with effect from 01 May 2021.
  • His tenure will be 3 years.
  • He succeed G Murlidhar, who superannuated on 30th April 2021.
  • Prior to this, he was heading Kotak’s General Insurance business since 2014
  • KLI: material unlisted subsidiary of Kotak Mahindra Bank
  • Apart from him, Suresh Agarwal has been appointed as MD & CEO of Kotak General Insurance.

9. Govt issues guidelines PLI Scheme for Food Processing Industry

  • Govt has issued guidelines for ‘Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the Food Processing Industry’ (PLISFPI).
  • Govt has also launched an online portal for the PLISFPI.
  • Govt has approved new Central Sector Scheme namely PLISFPI for implementation during 2021-22 to 2026-27 with an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore.
  • Aim: To support creation of global food manufacturing champions and support Indian brands of food products in the international markets.

10. India & Russia to establish a ‘2+2 Ministerial Dialogue’

  • India and Russia have decided to establish a new 2+2 dialogue at the foreign and defence minister level.
  • India has this mechanism with only QUAD member countries (US, Japan, and Australia)
  • Russia is the first non-Quad member country with which India will now have this mechanism.
  • The decision regarding the same was taken during a telephonic conversation between Indian PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin with focus on the ongoing COVID crisis in India.

  • He succeeded Arun Kumar Singh who died of Covid.
  • He was currently holding the responsibility of Chairman of Revenue Council.
  • Sanjeev Kumar Sinha (1986 batch) will replace Sharan in Revenue Council.
  • Sudhir Kumar will take over the charge of Chief Investigation Commissioner in the General Administration department from Sinha.
